When most people think of student housing, they think of crowded rooms, smelly communal bathrooms and paper-thin walls. But the new type of student housing available at the University Centre, seems to have wooed NJIT students, who are raving about the apartment complex.
One resident stated, "The only problem is, my parents keep reminding me they didn't have such luxurious living five years into their marriage."
NJIT student Tejpal Grewal said, "I especially enjoy the feeling of independence that I didn't feel at the dorms."
Many students said they loved the "convenience and luxury" of the University Centre. Many mentioned the high tech laundry machines, which will send you a text message on your cell phones when your laundry is done.
Some said that despite the similar price, there is no comparison between the University Centre apartments and the NJIT dorms, which one student compared to prison cells.
With a private fitness center, tanning beds, pool tables, air hockey tables, and computer labs, the University Centre certainly has amenities that the dorm buildings lack.
Living in a dorm has advantages over renting your own apartment, but the University Centre has most of those same advantages, according to several residents. It can be said that the apartment lifestyle is better suited for those who enjoy their own privacy, more space, their own kitchen and in general, more peace and quiet.
But one student said he preferred the dorms because, "Who wants to cook and do the dishes everyday?"
Safety is an important goal of the University Centre. To enter the apartment complex, residents need to swipe an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) card at the outside gate. They also have to swipe it by the security desk and again to use the elevator. These security measures are taken to make sure that the flow of traffic remains calm and people that don't live in the complex can't get in easily.
These measures do not make it difficult for guests to visit though, as residents may have up to ten friends signed into their room. The guards also work to make guests feel at home, according to residents.
"The guards are really nice and friendly. They maintain a great sense of humor while making sure to do their jobs well," said one resident, who mentioned guards Jose Ortiz and Andres Gonzales specifically.
"Our goal at University Centre is to provide the highest level of student service to our residents while providing a residential environment conducive to academic and personal success," says Gloria Clayton, Resident Director of the University Centre.

Leaving is a problem because it is exactly like renting an apartment. You have a lease that must be upheld. I wanted to live there but I realized that I could not afford to break my contract. (Continued…)
